Ukhtasar-Mountain of rock images

Amongst the origins of ancient history of Sunik a special credit is given to rock images, the most precious of which are the images on the cliffs on Ukhtasar and Takdzhur near the Sarnakunk village, which is at 3000-3300 m. above the sea level. There are so many of those images carved on cliffs that it is impossible to speak about their quantity and it is remarkable that all of them, except a few ones that time has erased, have been preserved in a great shape. These irreplaceable monuments provide valuable information about the everyday life, customs, religion and occupation of prehistoric men. These carvings allow to judge about animals that once existed in mountainous Armenia (ellagic goat, deer, stage, mufflon, horse, jackal, block, panther, lion, bear, zebra). There are many carvings of hunting items (arrows, bows, spears and shields) as well as hunters with bows etc., however, the carvings picturing the space are of particular interest. The carvings are classified into two major groups: the first group of carvings is from V-IV centuries BC and the second group to the III-II centuries BC. Some cliff carvings are exhibited in Sisian Museum of Rock.
