Goris
Goris is truly the prince of this mountainous country"¦ "The Prince" this is how the city built on the plain of Vararakn river (now called Goris river) in 70s of XIX century is known. Goris is the pride of Sunik, one of its most beautiful cities. The construction of the city was initiated by Manuchar Bek-Hyusenyan and a Russian general, at that time head of the region, Staratski. The city was constructed according to a matchless architectural plan, with a vertical street, with beautiful boxes like that of a chess board, in which were built three floored basalt and tuff houses with gardens, social, industrial, cultural etc. institutions.

There are two versions concerning the question: "Who the authors are?" According to the first one, the city was planned by foreigners, by German and French specialists, but the second version claims that the city was planned by architects Janushyan, Kozlov, and Khorchenko who led all the construction work. Goris is the hometown for many eminent Armenians who include outstanding writers as Aksel Bakunts, Sero Khanzadyan and businessmen like Arakel Aper.

For adventure seekers, for romantics and fantasists the primary attraction of Goris is the "Rock forest", which is precisely considered to be a treasure of Sunik. It is in a green forest covered basin, surrounded by rocky hurdles with sharp, naked peaks striving to the heaven. On the right, over the narrow plain of the river there is a forests and on the left slope there is a complete labyrinth of rocky pyramids, columns and obelisks; a whimsical result of wind's work over volcanic tuff laying here for millenniums.

The fantastic shape of cliffs reaching up for the sun, created by wind, water and the Sun, is spiced by the game of colors of brown, gray and black cones and towers of this amazing rock forest.

People lived in this favorable plain for ages, long ago before the foundation of contemporary city of Goris. The signs of their existence are easy to discover in tuff thickets. Throughout the plain are scattered intricate rocky sculptures, mysterious figures that would intimidate every single sculptor with their shape. In addition to all this, depending on the sun rays, the view of the old forest-city changed during the day. One could look at whimsical shapes of cliffs and be endlessly amazed by the imagination of the Nature and by the art of long past ancestors.
